; Chillan ; Lota links. Tony Corden
has attended the annual Victor Jara festival in Chillan
on two occasions and established links with the Centro
Cultural Victor Jara who organize the
festival and associated cultural events. The
region has strong connections with significant figures
from the “Chilean new Song “ movement..
Victor Jara was born near Chillan
possibly near to the village of Quiriquina. Violeta
Parra was born in San Carlos and Rolando Alarcon
moved to Chillan at the age of 10. On his last visit
to Chillan and the festival , Tony met up with the
superb charango player Cristian Leiva and arranged
for him to come to play at the festival in Machynlleth. He also visited
the coastal town of Lota and played music
with local singer Darlin Troncoso , who is the
subdirector of “Pabellon 81,” a local
cultural centre. Both Chillan
and Lota were badly affected by the recent
earthquake and in response, , the
“El Sueno Existe” group have organised
3 local fundraising events in Machynlleth and
raised in total £1,600. This money has been sent
to the Centro Cultural in Chillan and in Lota in
order to help with disaster relief. . Tony will be
travelling back to Chillan in November and will be
participating in the 12th Victor
Jara festival . It is hoped that
cultural links between the .two festivals can be
further developed.
